Content and the failure of AOL Time Warner
An article has attempted to address the reasons behind the failure at AOL Time Warner. Even people who were skeptical of the merger initially could never have predicted how horribly things would go wrong... including a loss of 98.7 billion dollars last year.
An often overlooked explanation is the glut of content in the world today. The barriers to entry into the world of content are really quite low. Want to be a musician? Just download the right software. Want to make a movie? Not that hard either.
Most of the interesting content, happens in a very personal manner. I think that this explains the huge success of things like online dating, online gaming, chats, email, and even ryze.
In addition, big media seems to be really wearing thin in many areas. They are driven by basic capitalist notions of profit and growth. This, of course, is in serious conflict with hard hitting, unbiased journalism. Would anyone be happier about middle east war than CNN?
Personally I have been quite selective in where I get news from these days. Mostly from a few portals, a few blogs, and google.
