India on the Rise, Salary-wise

When it comes to offshore outsourcing, the Indian programmer is king in terms of bargaining power.

A recent study showed that Indian IT workers received the highest salary increase last year among Asia-Pacific countries.

On the average, salaries of IT workers in India increased by 14 percent, according an annual survey by Hewitt Associates Inc.

Meanwhile, those in the Philippines, South Korea and China received pay hikes about half of what their Indian counterparts are receiving.

The finding is not so surprising but instead affirms India’s status as the leading outsourcing destination.

This also indicates that Indians, given their superior skills and track record, command salaries higher than others in the region.

But therein lurks the danger of being the best – and the most expensive.

According to META Group, the wage inflation in India is already forcing some companies abroad are starting to look at other countries like the Philippines, Eastern Europe and even China.

The wage inflation in India is expected to continue for the next several years, until other countries catch up in terms of skill.

Or until another “India” emerges from among other countries seeking their fair share of the global outsourcing pie.
