State of Animation - Outsourcing
There is no limit to skills which can now be outsourced offshore. Count
imagination and artistry in the list.
In the Philippines, animation is a bustling subsector of outsourcing. It
is actually one of five subsectors the Philippines government is heavily
promoting overseas, the others being call centers, software development,
medical transcription and BPO.
Unknown to many, sadly even by Filipinos, Philippine animation studios
have been doing subcontracted animation work for almost two decades now
for the likes of Hanna-Barberra, Warner Brothers and more recently Cartoon
Network.
It is also a given fact that some Filipino animators had a hand in last
year's animation hit Finding Nemo. It's just that the animation industry
in the Philippines gets unrecognized, in general.
According to an article from a news portal in the Philippines, India and even Korea are
now even a few years ahead of the Philippines. But that is in 3D
animation, the Philippines being generally strong in 2D animation.
Don't have an idea what's the difference between 3D and 2D? Think Finding
Nemo versus your usual Bugs Bunny cartoons.
Blame it on technology. Or better yet, the lack of it.
The Philippines is lagging behind because being a Third World country,
local animators simply cannot afford the latest 3D software like the Koreans.
But in terms of sheer artistic skills, Filipino animators are as good as
anybody in the industry. Just give them the right tools.
