More animation outsourcing

Animation studios in India are getting bigger along side call centers and BPO companies due to the influx of contract services.

While late in the game, Indian animation studios are reportedly starting to get mindshare alongside Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines.

Just recently, India's Padmalaya Films scored a US$14-million deal with Italy's Mondo TV, Europe's second leading cartoon producer and distributor.

Analysts estimate that Indian companies have already scored deals between US$50-$100 million, which is just a small fractions of a small slice of the US$10 billion global animation industry.

A number of companies, like UTV Software Communications (UTV), Toonz Animation, Pentamedia Graphics and Crest Communications, will soon get public listing.

This may indicate that these studios are getting bigger and are luring investors in anticipation of great demand from the likes of Warner Brothers, Disney and other US-based studios.

Yet analysts warn Indian animators need to move up from low-end outsourced work and start creating original work or at least invest with foreign partners in order to move up the value chain.
