Japan - India tie-up for ICT

Japan is aiming to establish itself as the top provider of broadband network all over Asia, and provide Official Development Assistance (ODA) for it as well.

In the works also are enhancements for its software imports, as well as plans to set into motion collaboration with India in the ICT sector. This was shared by Kozo Takahara, Vice Minister for International Affarirs and head of the 20-member Japanese delegation to Bangalore, in an interactive session organized by India communications provider Flextronics Software Systems Limited on Monday, March 21, 2005.

Takahara says,

"This is the first meeting of the policy dialogue initiated by Indian IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran during his recent visit to Japan and we are here to focus on companies in the communication sector."

Motai Akio, Yokosuka Telecom Research Park’s R & D Promotion Committee president informed the appreciative audience of the need to set up a forum to explore business opportunities with India in the field of wireless technology.

Takahara adds that both countries’ finance ministries are working on "modifying the witholding tax which is one of the major impediments in business. While Japan has proposed 0 per cent tax, Indian government is talking about 10 per cent."
