Dell to expand operations outsourced to India
Dell has set into motions plans to add 2,000 more people in its India operations by the end of the year. It aims to transform India into a hub for software development and back-office work. Dell Inc Chief Executive Kevin Rollins comments to Bangalore reporters, "It has been a very exciting time here in India, running customer support and internal software development centers."
He bared plans to bring the current staff population up 10,000 by January of next year from the current 8,000. This comes after a pullback of operations to the United States by Texas-based Dell around two years ago due to “customer complaints.” Rollins says that this was because, “Then, we were doing too much, too fast in too many places. We had to prioritize and refine."
This does not come as news as Western companies have been outsourcing by droves in order to cut costs by shifting software development, engineering design and routine office functions to English-speaking developing countries dangling big price discounts.
Dell currently has three call centers in India, a product testing center for corporate customers and a global software development center. There are plans to open up more offices in India in order to shift technology work and take advantage of India’s ever-expanding computer market. Total employee populations stands at 53,000 with revenues amounting to $49.2 billion by the end of fiscal year falling on January 2005.
