Meteorology jobs flying to outsourced skies

In its bid to emerge from bankruptcy, Denver International Airport’s largest carrier, United Airlines will be outsourcing meteorologist functions sometime fall of this year. Around 20 of the airline’s meteorologists would be included in the layoffs – a move that, according to United spokesperson Jean Medina, has been consulted with the Transport Workers Union of America. Most of the company’s meteorologists belong to the Chicago area.

Medina says that this is all part of United’s efforts to, "sustainable and viable going forward."

The meteorologists’ union local has yet to release a statement pending a return call for comment Tuesday night.

Parent company UAL Corp. has submitted its formal plan for exiting bankruptcy as it has been under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the past 2 ¼ years, with the meteorologists outsourcing move included.
