Microsoft-Nasscom Certs for Indian IT firms

Nasscom has teamed up with Microsoft India Ltd in an effort to push further India’s hold on the global outsourcing market. The Nasscom-Microsoft tandem will be offering quality certification programs to independent software vendors (ISVs).

Six-month certification courses were developed by the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) to help ISVs comply with product development requirements as set by the SEI CMM (Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model) at a level 3 certification. This is flexible enough to cover various technology platforms used. In charge of seeing this to action is QAI India Ltd, a leading software process consulting service firm in the Asia-Pacific, for Rs 125,000.

Covered in the certification courses are the best practices in the software development cycle covering:

  • architecture planning
  • development
  • user experience
  • testing
  • release operations
  • program management
  • product management
Kiran Karnik, Nasscom president said that this certification aims to give a hand to Indian ISVs in adopting international standards for engineering, product development and access both domestic and international products. He points out, "Though India has emerged as a global leader in the IT services' domain, there is a need to build on this leadership by leveraging the competencies IT firms have for capitalizing on the burgeoning products opportunity. . . We are confident the Indian ISVs will benefit from this quality certification to tap the global and domestic software products market for moving up the IT value chain."

Sheila Gulati, Microsoft India director for product development and platform evangelism furthers, "The increasing investment of global product development firms in R&D centres in India is an indication of the immense potential of the Indian software development community in creating globally accepted products. The certification will provide a level-playing field, allowing Indian ISVs to tap the global opportunities cost effectively."
