A Dim Future for US IT Workers

In a recent survey conducted by WashTech/CWA, a Seattle-based alliance of technology workers revealed that the IT workforce are now more inclined to join the union membership because of present circumstances.

The survey aimed to find out the perception of IT workers regarding their job and as well as their future. The survey revealed that there was a significant decrease in the workers’ optimism of their future. Back in the year 2003, 65% of the respondents said that they would be an increase in demand for tech workers but in the year 2005, the number dropped to 54%. The reasons for this pessimism were attributed to downsizing, health care cost shifting, job exporting and visa importing strategies. The survey also noted that the US has been in recovery since November 2001 but despite of that, the future of tech workers are still dim.

James Hoffa, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters attacked the globalization of US companies. He remarked that workers (both blue- and white-collar ones) are facing the same issues in their careers.
